Mildhybridfordon is a term used to describe a vehicle equipped with a mild-hybrid propulsion system that combines an internal combustion engine with a small electric motor and a battery to assist propulsion. Unlike full hybrids, a mild-hybridfordon typically cannot run solely on electric power for meaningful distances and relies on the internal combustion engine for primary propulsion.

Most mild-hybridfordon use a low-voltage electrical system, commonly 12 volts or a higher-voltage 48-volt setup. The electric motor functions as a starter-generator, providing engine start/stop capability and torque assistance during acceleration. Batteries are smaller than those in full hybrids, but they store enough energy to support the motor’s assist and to power accessories when the engine is off.

The system operates by providing torque assist during acceleration, enabling the engine to work more efficiently and potentially enabling a smaller displacement engine without sacrificing performance. It can also enable an automatic stop-start function to reduce fuel consumption when the vehicle is stationary. Energy recovered during braking or deceleration is stored in the battery to support future boosts or to run electrical systems, depending on the configuration.

Advantages of mild-hybridfordon include improved fuel economy, lower emissions, smoother engine start-stop operation, and the ability to use a smaller, lighter engine. Limitations include the inability to drive on electric power alone, modest electric range, added weight and cost, and efficiency gains that vary with driving conditions.
