Mikroaneurysmien are small, balloon-like bulges that develop in the walls of tiny blood vessels, most commonly in the retina of the eye. They are a characteristic sign of diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. These microaneurysms can also be seen in other conditions affecting blood vessels, such as hypertension.

Initially, microaneurysms may not cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as they progress, they can leak fluid, blood, or lipids into the surrounding retinal tissue. This leakage can lead to swelling of the retina (macular edema), which is a major cause of vision loss in diabetic retinopathy. In some cases, the microaneurysms may rupture, causing small hemorrhages in the retina.

The formation of microaneurysms is thought to be due to damage to the blood vessel walls caused by persistently high blood sugar levels. This damage weakens the vessel walls, making them more prone to forming these outpouchings.

Diagnosis of microaneurysms is typically made during a comprehensive eye examination, often using a technique called fluorescein angiography. This involves injecting a dye into the bloodstream and then taking photographs of the retina to highlight the abnormal blood vessels. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying condition, such as controlling blood sugar and blood pressure. In some cases, laser treatment or injections into the eye may be used to reduce leakage and swelling. Early detection and management are crucial to prevent vision loss.
