miinimum

Miinimum is not a standard mathematical term. It is most commonly seen as a misspelling of the word minimum. In mathematics and related fields, minimum has a precise meaning referring to the smallest value in a set or the smallest value that a function attains over a domain.

For a nonempty set S equipped with an order, a minimum is an element m in S such that m ≤ s for every s in S. If such an element exists, S is said to have a minimum; the minimum is unique when it exists. In the context of functions, a global minimum is a point x in the domain where f(x) ≤ f(x) for all x in the domain. A local minimum is a point where the function value is not exceeded by nearby points.

Existence of a minimum depends on the context. If S is compact and f is continuous on S, the extreme value theorem guarantees a global minimum. Without compactness or continuity, a minimum may fail to exist even if the function is bounded below.

In optimization, problems are often framed as finding the minimum of a cost or loss function. Techniques include calculus-based methods, gradient descent, and various forms of convex optimization. In computer programming, many languages provide operations to find the minimum value in a collection (for example, min in Python or Java’s Collections.min).

The plural of minimum is minima. The term minimum derives from Latin minimus, meaning the smallest. Because miinimum is not an established term, it is typically treated as a typographical error rather than a distinct concept.
