Mielialahäiriöille refers to mood disorders in Finnish. These are a group of psychiatric conditions characterized by significant disturbances in a person's emotional state. The most common types include depression and bipolar disorder.

Depression, often referred to as major depressive disorder, involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, and a range of emotional and physical problems. These can include changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

Bipolar disorder, on the other hand, is characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). During manic episodes, individuals may experience elevated energy, racing thoughts, impulsivity, and decreased need for sleep. Depressive episodes in bipolar disorder are similar to those experienced in major depression.

Other mood disorders include persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), which is a chronic, low-grade depression, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to changes in seasons.

The exact causes of mood disorders are not fully understood, but they are believed to result from a complex interplay of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Treatment typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing these conditions effectively and improving quality of life.
