Middlereflexives are a category of reflexive constructions described in linguistic literature as combining reflexivity with middleness, a semantic and sometimes syntactic stance that sits between active and passive voice. In middlereflexive constructions, the subject is involved in the action in a way that foregrounds the subject’s engagement or experience, rather than simply marking that the subject and object refer to the same entity. The form is typically linked to middle-voice phenomena in languages that grammatically encode voice distinctions or aspectual nuances.

Morphology and syntax commonly show that middlereflexives are marked with a reflexive marker on the verb, sometimes in conjunction with a separate middle-voice or aspectual marker. The marking can be affixal, clitic-based, or periphrastic, and the exact realization varies across languages. Syntactically, middlereflexives may influence transitivity or participant roles, and in some languages the subject may appear with different case or alignment patterns compared to ordinary reflexives.

Semantically, middlereflexives cover readings where the action is self-directed, experienced by the subject, or results in a state change for the subject, with readings that can emphasize control, involvement, or affectedness. They can express self-benefit, self-initiated change, or involuntary involvement, depending on the language and context. The readings are often sensitive to aspect, tense, and discourse.

Typologically, middlereflexives have been described in a variety of language families, with different languages employing distinct markers and constructions. They are related to, but distinct from, ordinary reflexives, intensive reflexives, and anticausatives.
