The mid-17th century, roughly 1640 to 1660, was a period of political realignment and religious conflict in Europe, alongside rapid scientific development and expanding global trade. The Thirty Years’ War ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, redefining state sovereignty and laying groundwork for modern diplomacy. In Britain, the civil wars culminated in Charles I’s execution in 1649, the brief republican regime under Cromwell, and the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

In science and letters, the era continued the Scientific Revolution’s momentum, emphasizing observation, mathematics, and skeptical inquiry. Institutions and networks spread, supporting advances in astronomy, physics, medicine, and natural philosophy.
