A microscopist is a scientist or technician who specializes in the use of microscopes to observe, image, and analyze structures that are not visible to the naked eye. They work across disciplines such as biology, medicine, materials science, geology, and forensic science, performing imaging, sample preparation, and data interpretation.

In laboratory settings, microscopists operate light or electron microscopes, select and prepare specimens, mount and stain samples, adjust illumination and optics, and acquire high-quality images. They may also conduct quantitative analyses, manage image data, troubleshoot instruments, maintain equipment, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Roles can range from bench researchers to technical staff supporting experimental programs, quality control, or educational outreach in museums and universities.

Training typically involves a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (biology, chemistry, physics, materials science) and hands-on experience with microscopy. Advanced positions may require graduate study or specialized certificates in microscopy techniques, along with proficiency in image analysis software (e.g., ImageJ/FIJI, commercial packages).

Key technologies include light microscopy (bright-field, phase-contrast, differential interference contrast, fluorescence), confocal and super-resolution methods, and electron microscopy (scanning and transmission). Sample preparation techniques—such as sectioning, staining, cryo-preservation, and coating for electron microscopy—are central to many workflows. In materials science and geology, microscopists may also use scanning probe methods.

The field has evolved from hand lenses and compound microscopes of the 17th century to modern digital and automated systems. Notable milestones include early observations by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and the development of the electron microscope by Ernst Ruska. Professional conduct emphasizes accuracy, data integrity, and safety, with active communities through societies such as microscopy associations worldwide.
