Micronationalists are individuals or groups who claim to be sovereign states, but are not recognized by established sovereign states or major international organizations. These entities, known as micronations, vary widely in their scope and ambition, ranging from a single person's backyard to a small parcel of land. Their motivations are diverse, including political protest, artistic expression, personal amusement, or a desire for self-determination.

The concept of a micronation is distinct from secessionist movements within recognized states, as micronations typically do not have the political power or territorial control to enforce their claims on a significant scale. Their existence often relies on the internet for promotion, communication, and even the establishment of virtual communities. Some micronations engage in mock diplomacy, issuing passports, currency, and enacting laws, further distinguishing them from simple online communities.

While some micronations have a serious political or philosophical underpinning, many are created as a form of satire or social commentary. The line between a genuine political movement and a hobby or artistic project can be blurred. Nevertheless, micronationalists generally adhere to the idea that they are a distinct nation, regardless of external recognition. Their activities, though often informal, reflect a persistent human impulse to define and govern oneself, even in a symbolic or unconventional manner.
