Microemulsifiers are compounds that play a crucial role in the formation and stabilization of microemulsions. These are complex mixtures of oil, water, and surfactants that are semblable to equilibrium dispersions and are usually used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations.

Microemulsifiers are typically amphiphilic, meaning they possess both hydrophilic and lipophilic regions. The hydrophilic part can interact with water, while the lipophilic part can interact with oil, allowing the microemulsifier to act as a bridge between the two phases. Typically, microemulsifiers consist of a surfactant, a non-polar co-surfactant, and sometimes a third component known as an adjuvant. The surfactant is responsible for reducing the interfacial tension between oil and water, while the non-polar co-surfactant enhances the formation of the liquid crystalline phase. The adjuvant often has no direct effect on the microemulsion but may serve as a stabilizer.

Microemulsifiers find applications in the oil industry, cosmetics, and pharmacy. They can improve emulsion stability, reduce the clouding point, and influence rheological properties. The technology has also opened new avenues for the delivery of drugs into the body through topical formulations.

The use of microemulsifiers can be traced back to the early 20th century, with early forms of detergents being used as microemulsifiers. However, it was not until the 1960s that the concept of microemulsification gained importance. Today, microemulsifiers are applied across various fields and industries, offering significant benefits in terms of emulsion stability, easy product application, and widespread application in the market.
