Microcosmic is an adjective describing something that relates to or is characteristic of a microcosm—a small, representative part of a larger system. A microcosmic entity reflects the structure, behavior, or dynamics of its broader context at a reduced scale.

Etymology: from Greek mikros "small" and kosmos "world," via Latin microcosmus. The term has been used since the Renaissance to denote a miniature world that mirrors the larger universe, and today it also denotes scaled-down models used in scientific study.

Applications: In science, microcosms are controlled, small-scale systems used to study complex processes, such as microbial, ecological, or chemical microcosms, and computer simulations that reproduce essential features of a larger system. In the social sciences, a small group, institution, or community may be described as a microcosm of broader society, illustrating how larger social forces operate on a smaller scale.

In literature, microcosmic settings or characters serve as a lens to examine universal themes within a contained milieu; in philosophy, the concept is tied to the idea of correspondence between scales, often contrasted with macrocosm, the larger system.
