Macrocosm refers to the larger, entire structure of a system, especially the universe or a cosmos, in contrast to the microcosm, which denotes a smaller, self-contained unit that reflects the larger system. The term comes from Greek makros meaning large and kosmos meaning world or order.

Historically, the concept appears in ancient Greek philosophy and in Hermeticism, where it was held that human beings mirror the order of the heavens and that correspondences link the macrocosm and microcosm. In Hermetic and alchemical traditions, this idea was used to justify the unity of nature and the possibility of knowledge through correspondence. During the Renaissance, scholars revived the idea along with the motto as above, so below; the order and structure of the cosmos were seen as reflected in human physiology and society.

In modern usage, macrocosm often denotes the universe at large in contrast to the microcosm of a small system or organism. In science, macrocosm refers to the large-scale structure of the cosmos studied by cosmology, while the term remains a metaphor in popular writing and philosophy. The concept is not a scientific principle but a framework for thinking about scale, relation, and correspondence.

In psychology and spiritual discourse, thinkers such as Carl Jung popularized related notions, viewing the psyche as mirroring or interacting with the external world, linking inner and outer scales in a macrocosm-microcosm relation.
