Mfecane, also known as Difaqane, refers to a period of widespread chaos, warfare, and forced migrations in southern Africa during the early 19th century. Although centered on the expansion and military reforms of the Zulu Kingdom under Shaka, the sequence of events touched many Nguni-speaking communities and other groups across regions that are now part of South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
