metningen

Metningen is a term used in Norwegian to describe a state in which a system contains as much of a given substance as can be accommodated under existing conditions. It denotes a limit beyond which no more of the substance can be dissolved, absorbed, or stored.

In chemistry, a saturated solution is one that has dissolved as much solute as possible at a specific temperature and pressure; any additional solute remains undissolved. The degree of saturation can be represented by a solubility curve; solubility increases with temperature for many solids, but not universally. Supersaturation occurs when the solution temporarily contains more solute than typical at that temperature, often leading to crystallization.

In physics and materials science, magnetic saturation occurs when increasing an external magnetic field no longer markedly increases the magnetization of a material because all magnetic moments are aligned.

In environmental and engineering contexts, sorption saturation describes the limit at which porous materials or soils can adsorb molecules; after saturation, the material's uptake rate declines and further sorption is limited by the available sites.

The term metningen is used across disciplines to denote a limit or maximum capacity in a transport, uptake, or storage process. In Norwegian scientific literature, metningen is commonly paired with context-specific qualifiers such as solubility, adsorption, or magnetization to specify what is saturated.
