Meteoroids are small, rocky or metallic bodies that travel through outer space. The term is often used interchangeably with asteroid, but meteoroids are generally smaller. They can range in size from dust grains to objects several meters in diameter. The vast majority of meteoroids originate from asteroids and comets. Asteroids are rocky bodies that orbit the Sun, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are icy bodies that also orbit the Sun, but they originate from the outer solar system and are known for their tails when they approach the Sun.

When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere, it begins to burn up due to friction with the air, creating a streak of light called a meteor, commonly known as a shooting star. If a meteoroid survives its passage through the atmosphere and lands on Earth's surface, it is then called a meteorite. Fragments of meteoroids are simply smaller pieces that have broken off from a larger meteoroid. This fragmentation can occur through collisions with other celestial bodies in space or due to stresses experienced as the meteoroid travels through the vacuum of space or enters an atmosphere. These fragments will follow similar trajectories to the parent meteoroid and can also become meteors or meteorites if they reach Earth. The study of meteoroids, including their fragments, provides valuable insights into the composition of the early solar system and the processes that shaped it.
