metaregistry

A metaregistry is a registry that stores metadata about metadata registries. It operates at a meta level to help users locate, compare, and govern multiple registries that themselves manage data element definitions, schemas, and metadata standards.

Entries in a metaregistry describe individual registries, including their scope (domain), the standards they support, data models, governance rules, access controls, version history, and provenance. The metaregistry may also record mappings or crosswalks between registries to support interoperability and data element reuse. By consolidating this information, it enables discovery and evaluation of suitable registries for a given use case.

Purpose and use cases include enabling discovery of appropriate metadata registries, supporting governance and auditing across registries, facilitating interoperability through mappings, and consolidating metadata governance within large organizations. Metaregistries are often components of data governance platforms, enterprise data catalogs, or standards programs, helping to coordinate multiple metadata artifacts and their custodians.

Relation to standards and interfaces: many metaregistries align with metadata standards such as ISO/IEC 11179, which provides a model for metadata registries. They typically expose programmatic interfaces or APIs to query registry metadata, support federation, and integrate with data catalogs and other discovery tools.

Challenges and considerations: implementing a metaregistry adds governance overhead, requires ongoing maintenance and trust among registry custodians, and entails careful versioning and access control. Fragmentation, inconsistent naming, and alignment of metadata models can hinder interoperability unless governed by clear policies.
