Metallsøkere, also known as metal detectors, are electronic devices used to detect the presence of metal. They work by emitting an electromagnetic field from a coil and then detecting disturbances in that field caused by metallic objects. The strength and nature of the disturbance can provide information about the size, depth, and type of metal.

The basic components of a metallsøker include a control box, which houses the electronics and power source, and a search coil, which is typically a circular disc at the end of a shaft. The search coil is swept over the ground or other surfaces. When a metal object is near, it alters the magnetic field generated by the coil, and this change is registered by the control box. The device then alerts the user, usually through an audible tone that changes in pitch or volume, or a visual display.

They are also employed in industry for inspecting materials and in construction for finding buried pipes and cables.
