Metabolitien is a term used in some scientific and speculative contexts to denote a proposed class of small molecular species produced transiently during cellular metabolism. The name combines metabolite with a suffix that signals a distinct, functionally overlapping but separable group within the broader metabolome. There is no universally accepted formal definition, and usage varies by author.

In proposed definitions, metabolitien cover low- to mid-weight molecules, roughly 100–1000 Da, that can act as metabolic intermediates, redox-active species, or signaling mediators. They may arise as byproducts of enzyme reactions, during cofactor cycling, or as deliberate regulators of enzymatic activity. They are often highly reactive or short-lived and may be compartmentalized within organelles or released extracellularly in limited amounts.

Biological significance, if established, would lie in linking metabolism to signaling, energy homeostasis, stress responses, and development. Metabolitien could participate in post-translational modifications, allosteric regulation, or cross-talk between tissues, providing rapid means to adjust cellular processes in response to metabolic state.

Measurement and debates: The transient and diverse nature of these molecules makes quantification challenging. Detection relies on rapid quenching, high-resolution mass spectrometry, NMR, and isotope tracing. Because definitions overlap with reactive intermediates, redox mediators, and lipid-derived signals, the concept is debated in the literature and is not a widely adopted formal class.
