Metabolismite is a term used in theoretical biogeochemistry and speculative mineralogy to describe a mineral-like phase that records microbial metabolic activity within its structure. The concept combines metabolism with the standard -ite naming for minerals, signaling a material that may form through the entombment of metabolic byproducts during mineral precipitation.

In proposed models, metabolismite forms in settings where biological energy transformations influence geochemical equilibria, such as hydrothermal vents, sulfidic springs, or subsurface biofilms. As microbial communities drive redox reactions, organic and inorganic components become incorporated into nascent solids, yielding heterogeneous, sometimes poorly crystalline materials. Composition is variable and can include carbon-rich organic residues in conjunction with iron, silicon, or calcium minerals.

Physical properties and appearance depend on composition but may range from black to brown, with low to moderate hardness and notable porosity. It is often described as amorphous or poorly crystalline, which complicates routine mineral identification. Analytical approaches emphasize spectroscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, and synchrotron-based diffraction to detect organic inclusions and trace elements.

Metabolismite remains a speculative or hypothetical category rather than an established mineral; nonetheless, it serves as a conceptual tool for studying microbe–mineral interactions and biogeochemical feedbacks, including potential roles in carbon cycling and mineral sequestration.
