Metabolicand is a proposed term used to describe an integrative framework for understanding metabolism as a network of interconnected pathways, signals, and environmental inputs. The idea is to view metabolic processes not as isolated chemical steps, but as participants in a broader regulatory system in which flux, gene expression, epigenetic state, and interactions with the microbiome influence outcomes such as energy balance, growth, and adaptation.

The term is not part of standard biochemical vocabulary and has appeared in limited discussions to illustrate a systems-level approach. As such, there is no formal definition or consensus in peer-reviewed literature. In this framework, researchers combine data from metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and microbiome analyses with computational methods such as constraint-based modeling, dynamic flux analysis, and network inference to study how metabolic pathways respond to cues and changes in context.

Potential applications include metabolic engineering, where desired product yields depend on network-wide regulation; precision medicine, where individual metabolic states interact with signaling and environmental factors; and nutrition science, in which diet-induced changes propagate through regulatory networks. The concept also serves as a bridge between metabolism-focused studies and systems biology.

Limitations include terminological ambiguity and the lack of standardized methods or metrics for defining a metabolicand state. Critics argue that existing terms and models in systems biology already cover much of this scope, and the neologism may hinder clear communication unless clearly defined in a given study.
