Metüülkvikshõbe is an organometallic compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂Hg. It is a highly toxic and volatile substance. In this compound, a methyl group (CH₃) is bonded to a mercury atom. Metüülkvikshõbe is one of the most potent neurotoxins known. It can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled as vapor, or ingested. Once in the body, it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and can accumulate in the brain and other organs.

The primary concern with metüülkvikshõbe is its profound neurotoxicity. Exposure can lead to severe and irreversible damage to the central nervous system. Symptoms can include tremors, ataxia (loss of coordination), visual and hearing impairments, memory loss, and in severe cases, paralysis and death. Metüülkvikshõbe is not typically found naturally in significant quantities. It is primarily formed through the biological methylation of inorganic mercury by microorganisms in aquatic environments, particularly in sediments. This process converts less toxic inorganic mercury into the highly toxic organic form, which can then bioaccumulate and biomagnify up the food chain. This means that organisms at higher trophic levels can have much higher concentrations of metüülkvikshõbe than those at lower levels, leading to significant risks for humans who consume contaminated seafood. Due to its extreme toxicity, handling and research involving metüülkvikshõbe require stringent safety precautions and are typically conducted in specialized laboratories.
