Messengereid, often referred to as messenger RNA (mRNA), is a type of ribonucleic acid that carries genetic information from DNA to the cellular machinery that makes proteins. In most organisms, messengereid is transcribed from a gene by RNA polymerase II in eukaryotes (and by appropriate polymerases in bacteria). The mature molecule in eukaryotes typically includes a 5' cap, a 5' untranslated region, a coding sequence, and a 3' untranslated region with a poly(A) tail; introns are removed during processing by splicing. Prokaryotic mRNA generally lacks introns and is often polycistronic, meaning a single transcript can encode multiple proteins.

Functionally, the coding sequence of messengereid determines the sequence of amino acids in a protein through the genetic code, read by ribosomes during translation. Translation begins at a start codon, usually AUG, and proceeds codon by codon until a stop codon is reached. The molecule acts as a temporary blueprint, directing where and how much protein is produced under the control of cellular signals and regulatory elements.

Regulation and turnover are essential aspects of messengereid biology. Its abundance is governed by transcription rates and mRNA stability, which are influenced by sequence elements in the untranslated regions and by RNA-binding proteins and microRNAs. Messengereid degradation occurs through cellular exonucleases after processing steps such as deadenylation and decapping.

In biotechnology and medicine, messengereid is central to gene expression studies and therapeutic applications, including synthetic mRNA used in vaccines and other treatments, reflecting its pivotal role in translating genetic information into functional proteins.
