Meriympäristöjä refers to marine environments, the habitats found within the world's oceans and seas. These vast and interconnected ecosystems are characterized by saltwater and are home to an incredible diversity of life, from microscopic plankton to the largest whales. Marine environments can be broadly categorized into different zones based on factors such as depth, light penetration, and proximity to land.

Coastal zones, including estuaries, coral reefs, and kelp forests, are highly productive and biologically rich areas where land meets sea. Estuaries, where freshwater rivers mix with saltwater, are particularly important nurseries for many fish and invertebrate species. Coral reefs, often called the "rainforests of the sea," support a quarter of all marine life despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor.

Open ocean environments, also known as the pelagic zone, extend from the coast outwards. This zone is further divided into the photic zone, where sunlight penetrates and photosynthesis occurs, and the aphotic zone, which is perpetually dark. Deep-sea environments, including trenches and abyssal plains, are characterized by extreme pressure, cold temperatures, and a lack of light, yet they harbor unique and specially adapted organisms.

The health of marine environments is crucial for global ecosystems and human well-being. They play a vital role in regulating climate, providing food sources, and supporting economies through fishing, tourism, and transportation. However, these environments face significant threats from human activities such as pollution, overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction, making conservation efforts essential for their preservation.
