Menthols are chiral compounds with multiple stereoisomers. Naturally occurring menthol is primarily the (-)-enantiomer. The cooling sensation results from activation of the TRPM8 receptor in sensory neurons. They are soluble in lipids and have a characteristic minty odor, making them suitable for use in various flavors and fragrances.

Uses of menthols include flavoring in foods, beverages, toothpaste, gum, and confectionery; fragrance and cooling in cosmetics and personal care products; and active ingredients in topical analgesics, cough drops, and nasal inhalers. They are also used to mask odors or enhance mouthfeel in certain products.
