Menssmärta, also known as dysmenorrhea, refers to pain experienced during menstruation. It is a common condition affecting many individuals who menstruate, and the severity can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. The pain is typically felt in the lower abdomen, but can also radiate to the back and thighs. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

There are two main types of menssmärta. Primary dysmenorrhea is not caused by an underlying medical condition and is thought to be related to the release of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that cause uterine muscle contractions. These contractions can reduce blood flow to the uterus, leading to pain. Secondary dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, is caused by a specific medical condition such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, or adenomyosis.

Diagnosis usually involves a medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes imaging tests like an ultrasound to rule out secondary causes. Treatment for primary dysmenorrhea often involves over-the-counter pain relievers, heat application, and lifestyle modifications like exercise and stress management. For secondary dysmenorrhea, treatment focuses on addressing the underlying medical condition.
