Menstrual blood, or mensblod in Swedish, refers to the blood and other materials shed from the lining of the uterus during menstruation, a regular part of the female reproductive cycle in humans and some other mammals.

During each cycle, the endometrium thickens in preparation for possible pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, hormones cause the lining to break down and shed, resulting in menstrual blood. The flow normally lasts about 2 to 7 days and the total blood loss is roughly 30 to 80 milliliters, though ranges vary widely. The discharge contains a mixture of blood, vaginal secretions, endometrial tissue, and mucus. Cycle length typically ranges from 21 to 35 days.

Color and appearance can vary from bright red to dark red or brown, depending on how quickly blood drains and oxidizes. Menstrual blood is not fundamentally different from other venous blood; it is simply part of a normal reproductive process.

The menstrual cycle is governed by hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Menarche marks the onset of menstruation during puberty, while menopause marks its end later in life. Abnormal bleeding patterns—heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) or very light/spotty bleeding—may indicate underlying conditions and warrant medical evaluation.

Individual experiences and management vary. Common hygiene products include pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and leak-proof underwear. Cultural attitudes toward menstruation vary widely and can influence access to information and care.
