Memorytriggered, sometimes written as memory-triggered, describes the phenomenon whereby a sensory cue, situation, or context evokes recall of a past experience or association. It is not a formal disorder, but a general description used in psychology to refer to cue-dependent memory retrieval, in which a present stimulus activates stored memories.

Mechanisms: Retrieval often begins with a cue that activates overlapping neural networks in the hippocampus and neocortex, with the amygdala assigning emotional salience. The recalled memory may be vivid or vague and can be influenced by current mood, beliefs, and subsequent information. Repeated recall can lead to reconsolidation, potentially updating or altering the memory trace.

In everyday life, memory triggers shape nostalgia, mood, and behavior. A familiar scent, a song, or a place can bring back details of the past or influence present choices. In clinical contexts, triggers are relevant to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders, where reminders can provoke distress. Therapeutic approaches, including controlled exposure and cognitive processing, aim to modify the response to triggers and reduce impairment.

Cautions: cue-driven recall is not always accurate and can involve memory distortion or conflation with other events. The memory process is reconstructive, and triggers may generate false or altered recollections.
