It is not a formal taxonomic concept but a label applied to processes that generate genetic diversity through chromosome pairing, recombination, and a reduction in genome copy number.

In natural systems, meiosislike events may occur during sexual development or genetic exchange in a variety of organisms. These processes can include pairing of homologous chromosomes, crossing over, and segregation that reduces the chromosome number, yet they may differ from classical meiosis in timing, cytology, or the number of divisions.
