Medelspänningen, often translated as average voltage, refers to the mean value of a time-varying voltage waveform over a specific period. However, in alternating current (AC) circuits, the voltage fluctuates over time, and calculating the average voltage requires integration over the relevant time interval.

For a pure sinusoidal AC voltage, the average voltage over one complete cycle is zero because the positive and negative portions of the waveform cancel each other out. Therefore, when referring to the average voltage of an AC signal, it is common to consider the average of the absolute value of the waveform over one half-cycle. This is known as the rectified average or mean absolute value. For a sine wave with peak voltage Vp, the rectified average voltage is (2/π)Vp, which is approximately 0.637 times the peak voltage.
