Mechanists are adherents of mechanism, the viewpoint that natural phenomena can be explained entirely by physical causes and the mechanical interactions of parts. In philosophy and the sciences, mechanists seek explanations that detail how components interact, move according to laws, and produce observable effects, rather than appealing to vital essences or non-physical causes.

The term emerged in the early modern period as a counterpoint to vitalism and more teleological explanations. Key figures associated with mechanistic thought argued that living and inanimate systems alike operate like machines, governed by matter, motion, and force. This stance helped motivate experimental methods, mathematical description, and a preference for reductionist analyses of complex processes.

Core tenets of mechanism include causal determinism, reductionism, and a focus on describable mechanisms at appropriate levels of organization. Mechanists typically emphasize, where possible, model-building, prediction, and empirical validation. In practice, the approach has been influential across physics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and, later, molecular biology and neuroscience, where processes are explained in terms of interactions among components such as molecules, cells, and tissues.

In contemporary usage, the explicit label “mechanist” is less common, as mechanistic explanations are foundational across the sciences. The term is often contrasted with vitalist or holistic approaches that highlight emergent properties or non-physical causes. Critics of strict mechanism argue that some phenomena require higher-level theories or systems-based views, though modern science frequently integrates mechanistic detail with broader concepts such as systems thinking and complexity.
