The meadowlark is a common name for several species of grassland birds belonging to the genera Sturnella and Leiste. These birds are primarily found in North and South America. The Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) and the Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) are two of the most widely recognized species in North America. While they share similar habits and appearances, their songs are distinct, which is a primary way ornithologists differentiate them. The Eastern Meadowlark's song is a clear, whistled phrase, whereas the Western Meadowlark's song is a more musical, flutelike series of whistles.
