Mattilsyn, commonly referred to in English as the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, is a government agency in Norway tasked with protecting public health through safe food, animal health and welfare, and plant health. Its remit covers the entire food chain from primary production to the consumer, including farms, slaughterhouses, food manufacturing, wholesale and retail, and restaurants. The authority conducts inspections, approves facilities, licenses operators, and enforces regulations related to food safety, animal welfare, and plant health. It also monitors imports and exports of food and feed to ensure compliance with Norwegian and EU/EEA requirements, and it performs surveillance for animal diseases and plant pests.
