Matingkestävyys, often translated as mating resistance or mating difficulty, refers to the biological phenomenon where individuals of the same species are unable to produce viable offspring due to reproductive isolation mechanisms. This can occur at various stages of the reproductive process. Pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms prevent mating from occurring or fertilization from being successful. These include differences in courtship rituals, mating seasons, habitat preferences, or incompatible reproductive organs. Behavioral isolation is a common example, where distinct mating calls or behaviors prevent recognition between potential mates.
Post-zygotic isolation mechanisms, on the other hand, occur after fertilization has taken place. These can result
