Materialsyntes, or materials synthesis, is the set of methods used to create and tailor materials with specific structures, compositions, and properties. It spans chemical, physical, and mechanical processes that build materials from atoms, molecules, or precursors, with the aim of controlling micro- and nano-scale features that govern macroscopic performance.

Synthesis approaches are broadly categorized as bottom-up and top-down. Bottom-up methods assemble materials from smaller units, while top-down methods shape bulk materials into desired forms. Common solid-state routes include calcination, sintering, diffusion, and solid-state reactions that form ceramics, metals, or intermetallics. Solution-based routes involve chemical reactions in liquids, such as precipitation, sol-gel processing, and solvothermal or hydrothermal synthesis, often used to make nanoparticles, oxides, and hybrids. Deposition techniques create thin films and coatings, including chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, and atomic layer deposition. Other routes include melt processing, combustion synthesis, and high-energy ball milling, which can produce powders, composites, or amorphous phases. Nanostructuring and templating enable control over size, shape, and porosity.

Applications of material synthesis range from electronics and semiconductors to catalysis, energy storage and conversion, coatings, biomaterials, and structural components. Key considerations include phase purity, crystallinity, particle size distribution, defect engineering, scalability, cost, and environmental and safety aspects. Ongoing advances focus on green chemistry, in situ synthesis, and integrated fabrication workflows to accelerate development of materials with targeted properties.
