Materialelære, or materials science, is the interdisciplinary field that studies the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic, micro, and macro scales and their properties and performance in real-world applications. It combines principles from physics, chemistry, and engineering to understand how materials are formed, how their internal structure governs behavior, and how to optimize them for specific uses.

The field covers a wide range of material classes, including metals and alloys, ceramics and glasses, polymers, composites, and emerging materials such as nanomaterials and biomaterials. Key properties of interest include mechanical (strength, stiffness, toughness, ductility), thermal (conductivity, heat capacity), electrical and magnetic, optical, and chemical resistance. The central concept is the structure–property–processing relationship: the internal structure (grain size, phases, defects) influences properties, which in turn are affected by how the material was processed (casting, forming, heat treatment, welding, additive manufacturing).

Processing and manufacturing are essential aspects, including design of the processing route to achieve desired microstructures, as well as quality control, surface engineering, and life-cycle considerations. Materials selection and performance assessment occur throughout a product’s life, from prototyping to service.

Techniques used in materialelære span characterization and testing, such as microscopy (optical and electron), diffraction (XRD), spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and mechanical tests (tension, hardness, impact, fatigue), as well as non-destructive evaluation. Modeling and theory in thermodynamics, kinetics, phase diagrams, and crystallography support interpretation and design.

Education in materialelære prepares students to solve problems across industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, electronics, and healthcare, with a growing emphasis on sustainability, recycling, and advanced functional materials.
