A matchbook is a small booklet-like container that holds a supply of matches. It consists of a folded paperboard cover bound along one edge, with a stack of matches enclosed inside. The exterior of the cover typically includes a striking surface or an attached striker used to ignite the matches, and many early designs featured the striking material on the outside for convenience. Typical matchbooks measure about 2 by 1.5 inches and contain roughly 20 to 40 matches. The design often includes advertising or branding on the cover.

History and usage: Matchbooks became widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a compact, inexpensive promotional item. Businesses such as hotels, restaurants, tobacco companies, and travel destinations widely used them to advertise while providing a useful consumer good. The combination of portability, low production cost, and visual appeal led to a large variety of designs, including souvenir, promotional, and event-specific editions. Over time, safety regulations and changes in consumer smoking habits reduced their central role in advertising, but they remain popular as collectibles and historical artifacts.

Construction and features: The matches are glued into the inner pages or the bottom of the booklet, with a friction or abrasive surface on the cover or a dedicated striker area for lighting. Some matchbooks used “strike-anywhere” matches, but many modern versions employ safety matches that require a specific striking surface. Materials are primarily paperboard and wood matches, with inks and coatings for decoration.

Collecting and culture: Collectors, including hobbyists known as phillumenists, seek out vintage and rare issues, especially unique advertising editions, travel souvenirs, and limited runs. Collectors document brands, dates, and printing variations, preserving a record of commercial design and social history.
