Aspiring craftsmen began as apprentices, advanced to journeymen, and, after completing a masterwork or masterpiece that demonstrated skill and artistry, could petition the guild for master status. Becoming a master ordinarily allowed the individual to open a workshop, supervise apprentices, and set prices and production practices. Risk and responsibility for the quality of goods rested with the master.

Today, the path to mastery varies by country and craft. Some jurisdictions rely on formal certification, licensing, or professional examinations; others rely on recognition by professional associations or by peer assessment.
