Masteravain is the Finnish term used for a master key, a key designed to open multiple locks that belong to a common keying system. In practice, a master key grants access to a defined set of locks, while individual keys open only their assigned locks.

In a typical master key system, locks are engineered to accommodate different levels of access. Each lock has its own change key that opens only that lock. A master key, or set of master keys, can open all locks within a subgroup. Some installations also use a grand master key that can open every lock in a larger building or complex. The concept relies on the lock’s internal pinning, creating multiple valid shear lines so that different keys can turn the same cylinder.

Applications for master keys include large residences, hotels, office buildings, and facilities where centralized access management is practical. They enable property managers and security personnel to grant and revoke access without issuing new keys to every lock. Modern implementations may combine mechanical master key systems with electronic access control for enhanced traceability and control.
