Massekapasitet refers to the maximum amount of pulp that a pulp mill, or a group of mills, can produce over a given period, typically measured as annual production capacity. The term is commonly used in the pulp and paper industry and is usually expressed in metric tons per year (t/a or t/year). It describes the design or planned output of a facility rather than the actual amount produced in a specific year.

Capacity is often distinguished from actual production. Nominal or design capacity indicates the theoretical maximum based on equipment and process design, while practical or effective capacity accounts for real-world factors such as maintenance downtime, energy supply, chemical consumption, and feedstock availability. Utilization is the ratio of actual production to capacity and can fluctuate with market demand, outages, or supply constraints. Pulp capacity must be considered in relation to product types, since mills can produce different grades of pulp (for example kraft, sulfite, or dissolving pulp) with varying process requirements and volumes.

Several factors influence massekapasitet: the size and configuration of digesters, washers, bleaching lines, and refiners; the availability and cost of raw materials (wood fibre); energy supply (steam and electricity); maintenance schedules; environmental regulations; and planned expansions or retrofits. Market dynamics, such as demand for specific pulp grades and fiber markets, also affect how capacity is utilized. Capacity data are used in investment planning, competitive benchmarking, and supply chain negotiations, and they can change with new technology or shifts in forestry resources.
