Massamuovaus is a manufacturing concept in plastics and composite materials describing the shaping of large-volume parts through bulk molding techniques. The term combines the Finnish words massa (bulk or mass) and muovaus (forming). It is used in industrial contexts to refer to high-throughput molding processes that produce rigid components with relatively low part-to-part variation.

The process relies on resin systems combined with reinforcing fillers to create a moldable compound, such as bulk molding compound (BMC) or sheet molding compound (SMC). In operation, the compound is prepared, placed into heated molds, and cured under heat and pressure to form the finished part. Depending on the material system, the process may involve stages such as preforming, compression, and post-cure steps.

Common molding methods associated with massamuovaus include compression molding and transfer molding, which accommodate viscous thermoset resins and fiber fillers. Thermoplastic variants can be shaped by injection molding or matched-die compression for high-speed production. Tooling costs are a consideration, but once molds are prepared, the cycle times can be short and repeatability high.

Materials used span unsaturated polyester and epoxy resins with glass fibers or mineral fillers, as well as certain high-temperature thermoplastics. Typical applications include automotive panels and interior parts, electrical housings, consumer appliance components, and other bulk-formed structural or decorative parts.

Advantages of massamuovaus include high production rates, good surface finish, and dimensional stability for large runs. Limitations involve tooling costs, design constraints dictated by mold geometry, and resin-specific curing or processing windows.
