manzarda

Manzarda is a type of attic room found in buildings, particularly common in older European architecture. It is characterized by the sloped roofline that forms part of its walls. The term originates from the French architect François Mansart, who is credited with popularizing this design feature in the 17th century.

These rooms are often located directly beneath the roof and can be distinguished by their angled ceilings. Historically, manzarda spaces were frequently used for servants' quarters or as storage areas due to their less conventional shape and potential for reduced headroom. In modern renovations, however, they are often converted into habitable spaces like bedrooms, studies, or studios, adding unique architectural character to a home. The use of dormer windows is common in manzarda construction to provide natural light and ventilation to the interior space. This design allows for a more usable attic area than a simple steeply pitched roof might otherwise offer. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with attic or garret, though it specifically refers to the architectural style involving the sloped walls.
