Mansetti is the Finnish term for the cuff at the end of a sleeve on a shirt or jacket. It is the fabric band that encircles the wrist and serves to close or finish the sleeve opening. Cuffs can be primarily functional, providing fastening and fit, and can also contribute to the garment’s style.

Types and fastenings

The most common cuffs on dress shirts are button cuffs, which use a small button and a corresponding hole or placket. Care depends on the fabric. Most cotton and cotton-blend cuffs are machine-washable, with care instructions on the garment label. Ironing is usually performed on a medium heat setting to achieve crisp, clean edges. French cuffs require attention to cufflink closures and may demand careful pressing to maintain sharp folds.

Beyond securing the sleeve, cuffs influence the garment’s silhouette and formality. Button cuffs offer practicality and everyday wear, while French cuffs provide a distinctive, formal look appropriate for business attire and formal events.
