Manguera is the Spanish term for a flexible conduit, or hose, used to convey liquids or gases from one place to another. The word is widely used across Spain and Latin America to refer to hoses of various sizes and applications. In English, the equivalent term is hose or hose line. Mangueras are essential tools in gardening, agriculture, firefighting, manufacturing, and many industrial settings.

Construction and materials

A typical manguera consists of an inner tube that contacts the conveyed fluid, a reinforcement layer (such as textile braids or spiral wire) to withstand pressure, and an outer protective cover. Common materials include natural or synthetic rubber, nitrile, PVC, and polyurethane. Hoses may be reinforced for higher pressure, have temperature and chemical compatibility ratings, and feature fittings or couplings at the ends to connect to equipment or connectors. Specifications are usually given in terms of inner diameter, pressure rating, and the intended use (water, air, chemicals, steam, etc.).

Types and applications

Domestic garden hoses are lightweight for irrigation and washing tasks. Irrigation hoses and lay-flat hoses are used in agricultural and landscape systems. Industrial and specialty hoses are designed for higher pressures or specific fluids, including air, water, fuels, chemicals, or steam. Fire hoses are a distinct, heavy-duty category built to NFPA or regional standards. Some mangueras are designed for suction, others for high-temperature or chemical transfer.

Maintenance and safety

Regular inspection for cracks, leaks, bulges, and wear is advised. Avoid exceeding the recommended pressure rating, protect from direct sun exposure when possible, and store drained hoses in a cool, dry place. Proper connectors and avoidance of sharp bends extend service life.
