Mallintarkistusmenetelmä, known in English as model checking, is a formal verification technique used to automatically check whether a system model satisfies a given specification. It is primarily employed to detect design flaws in hardware and software systems. The process involves creating an abstract model of the system and then exploring all possible states of that model to see if any violate the specified properties.

At its core, model checking represents the system as a state-transition system, often a finite automaton. The properties to be verified are typically expressed in a temporal logic, such as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) or Computation Tree Logic (CTL). The model checker systematically explores the state space of the system model, verifying that the temporal logic formula holds true for all reachable states and transitions.

If a violation is found, the model checker usually provides a counterexample, which is a trace of states and transitions leading to the erroneous behavior. This counterexample is crucial for debugging and understanding the root cause of the design flaw.

Model checking is particularly effective for finding concurrency-related bugs, such as deadlocks, race conditions, and assertion violations. However, its applicability is limited by the state explosion problem, where the number of states in the system model becomes too large to explore exhaustively. Various techniques, including abstraction, symbolic model checking (using Binary Decision Diagrams or SAT solvers), and approximate model checking, have been developed to mitigate this challenge and extend the scope of model checking to larger and more complex systems.
