Maksanäytteet refer to tissue samples taken from the liver. These samples are primarily used for diagnostic purposes, allowing medical professionals to examine the liver's health and identify any abnormalities. The procedure for obtaining a maksanäyte is known as a liver biopsy.

There are several methods for performing a liver biopsy. Percutaneous biopsy involves using a needle inserted through the skin to reach the liver. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy is another method where a needle is guided by an ultrasound probe inserted through the esophagus. In some cases, a surgical biopsy may be performed, either laparoscopically or during open surgery, to obtain a larger sample or when other methods are not feasible.

The collected liver tissue is then sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination. Pathologists analyze the sample to detect signs of diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, liver cancer, or autoimmune conditions affecting the liver. The biopsy can also help determine the stage and grade of liver disease, guiding treatment decisions and predicting prognosis.

Maksanäytteet are crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective management of a wide range of liver conditions. While generally safe, liver biopsies, like any medical procedure, carry some risks, which are discussed with the patient before the biopsy is performed.
