Mahajääma is a term used to describe a large, relatively flat area of land that has been significantly shaped by glaciers. These landforms are found in regions that were once covered by continental ice sheets, such as parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. The slow movement of vast glaciers scoured the land, transporting and depositing immense quantities of rock and sediment.

The resulting landscapes are characterized by a variety of features. Moraines, which are ridges of till deposited at the edge or base of a glacier, are common. Drumlins, which are elongated hills formed by glacial ice acting on underlying unconsolidated till or ground moraine, are also characteristic. Kettle lakes, formed when a glacier retreats and leaves behind buried ice that melts, creating depressions, dot these areas. Outwash plains, broad, flat areas of sand and gravel deposited by meltwater streams flowing from the glacier, are also typical.

Mahajääma can influence soil types, water drainage patterns, and vegetation. The sediments deposited by glaciers are often rich in minerals, contributing to fertile soils in some areas. The irregular topography created by glacial action can lead to numerous lakes and wetlands. These features have historically played a significant role in human settlement and land use, often favoring agriculture or providing resources.
