Magnéziumhiány, also known as hypomagnesemia, refers to a condition where the body has a low level of magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. It is also involved in protein synthesis, bone health, and the production of energy.

Several factors can contribute to magnéziumhiány. Inadequate dietary intake of magnesium-rich foods is a common cause. Certain medical conditions, such as gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn's disease or celiac disease, can impair magnesium absorption. Kidney problems can also lead to excessive magnesium loss. Additionally, the use of certain medications, including diuretics, proton pump inhibitors, and some antibiotics, can deplete magnesium levels. Alcoholism is another significant risk factor.

Symptoms of magnéziumhiány can vary depending on the severity of the deficiency. Mild cases may present with no noticeable symptoms. However, as levels decrease, individuals might experience muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, and tremors. More severe deficiencies can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, personality changes, and even coma.

Diagnosis typically involves a blood test to measure serum magnesium levels. Treatment aims to replenish magnesium stores, usually through oral magnesium supplements or, in severe cases, intravenous magnesium administration. Dietary changes to increase magnesium intake are also recommended. Prevention involves ensuring a balanced diet rich in magnesium from sources like leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
