Magneettinauha, also known as magnetic tape, is a medium for storing analog or digital information. It consists of a long, thin strip of plastic film coated on one side with a magnetic material. This magnetic coating allows the tape to record and store data by altering the magnetic orientation of the particles on its surface.

The development of magnetic tape began in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with significant advancements made by companies like BASF and Ampex. Initially used for audio recording, its applications expanded to include video recording and, crucially, digital data storage. The principle behind its operation involves a read/write head that generates magnetic fields to magnetize or demagnetize the tape's coating as it passes by, thereby encoding information. Reading data involves a similar process where the magnetic patterns on the tape induce electrical signals in the read head.

Magnetic tape played a pivotal role in the early days of computing, serving as a primary method for storing large amounts of data, including operating systems, applications, and user files. Its sequential access nature, however, made it slower for retrieving specific data compared to later direct-access storage devices like hard drives. Despite this, its high storage density and relatively low cost per bit kept it relevant for archival purposes and large-scale data backup for many years. Modern magnetic tape technology continues to evolve, offering massive capacities and long-term reliability, making it a viable option for cloud storage providers and enterprise data centers for long-term data retention.
