A magneettikytkin, or magnetic switch, is a type of electrical switch that is operated by a magnetic field. This field is typically generated by a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. Magnetic switches are often used in applications where a non-contact switching mechanism is desired, offering advantages such as longevity, resistance to dust and moisture, and the ability to operate in hazardous environments.

There are several common types of magnetic switches. Reed switches are a well-known example, consisting of two ferromagnetic reeds sealed in a glass envelope. When a magnetic field is brought near, the reeds become magnetized and attract each other, closing the electrical circuit. Other types include Hall effect sensors, which detect the presence and strength of a magnetic field and produce a corresponding electrical signal, and inductive proximity sensors, which operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction to detect metallic objects.

The operation of a magneettikytkin can be either normally open (NO), where the circuit is closed when the magnetic field is present, or normally closed (NC), where the circuit is open when the magnetic field is present. Some magnetic switches are also designed to be changeover switches, offering both NO and NC contacts.

Applications for magneettikytkimet are diverse. They are commonly found in door and window sensors for security systems, as limit switches in industrial automation, in various automotive applications, and in consumer electronics for position sensing. Their reliability and contactless nature make them suitable for situations where mechanical switches might fail due to wear or contamination.
