Magaverkir is the Icelandic term for abdominal pain or stomach cramps. It is a symptom rather than a disease and can result from many different conditions affecting the digestive tract or nearby organs. The pain can be cramping, sharp, dull, or burning and may vary in location and intensity. It may occur alone or with other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, fever, or fatigue.

Common causes include functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia; infections like gastroenteritis; inflammatory conditions such as gastritis or inflammatory bowel disease; and mechanical problems such as constipation or gas. More serious etiologies include appendicitis, pancreatitis, gallstones, peptic ulcers, kidney stones, or urinary tract infections. Gynecological causes (in people with female reproductive organs) include dysmenorrhea or ectopic pregnancy. The precise location and quality of pain can help guide initial evaluation.

Red flags warranting urgent assessment include sudden, severe abdominal pain; persistent pain that worsens; fever with abdominal tenderness; vomiting with signs of dehydration; blood in stool or vomit; inability to keep fluids down; or pregnancy-related concerns. In children, older adults, or people with immune compromise, earlier medical review is advised.

Evaluation typically starts with medical history and physical examination, followed by targeted tests such as blood work, urine analysis, pregnancy test, and imaging (ultrasound or CT). Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve rest and fluids for mild symptoms, dietary adjustments, antacids or anti-spasmodics for functional pain, or specific therapies for infections, inflammation, or obstruction.
