Macrotermites are a group of termites belonging to the subfamily Macrotermitinae, which are notable for their complex social structures and specialized farming behaviors. These termites are primarily found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Australia, where they thrive in warm, humid environments. Unlike other termites, macrotermites are known for cultivating fungi in their nests, a practice that has earned them the nickname "farmer termites."

The nests of macrotermites, often referred to as mounds, are among the most impressive architectural feats in the insect world. These structures can reach heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters) and are constructed from soil, saliva, and fecal matter, which harden to form durable walls. The mounds provide insulation, regulate humidity, and protect the colony from predators and environmental extremes. Some species, such as *Macrotermes michaelseni*, build massive, dome-shaped mounds that can weigh several tons.

Macrotermites exhibit a highly organized caste system, consisting of workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. The queen, a single fertile female, is the heart of the colony, laying thousands of eggs per day. Workers, sterile females, forage for food, tend to the fungal gardens, and maintain the nest. Soldiers, equipped with powerful mandibles, defend the colony against threats like ants and other predators. The fungal gardens cultivated by macrotermites are grown on a substrate of chewed wood and termite feces, which the insects inoculate with a symbiotic fungus. This mutualistic relationship allows the termites to derive nutrients from otherwise indigestible plant material.

Macrotermites play a significant ecological role in their habitats, contributing to nutrient cycling and soil aeration through their tunneling activities. However, they are also considered agricultural pests in some regions, as they can damage crops and wooden structures. Their unique behaviors and ecological importance make them a subject of interest in studies of insect biology, symbiosis, and evolutionary biology.
